Parents and teachers often have questions about the behaviour of children and adolescents. They may worry about whether a behaviour is appropriate for a particular age or developmental stage, or a sign that something might be wrong. They may wonder why it is occurring, and how best to respond.
The ABCs of Mental Health provides two free, web-based Resources – one for teachers and one for parents – to help answer these questions. The Resources include ideas for promoting the mental health of children and adolescents, information about how children change as they get older, descriptions of behaviours that might indicate a problem, and practical suggestions for steps to take.

The program aims to support youth in their efforts to a) experience healthy relationships, b) participate in activities that may have been previously inaccessible to them, c) enjoy physical activity to promote their overall wellness, d) experience alternatives to substance use, and e) learn new skills.

An organization that provides a range of programs for children, individuals and families. Programs include family counselling, counselling for children who witness abuse, sexual abuse intervention, stop the violence as well as early childhood support services such as StrongStart, Nobody’s Perfect Parenting program, Building Beautiful Babies (pregnancy outreach) and childcare referral/resource.
They also have other support services like Bridging for Women to assist women in overcoming abuse related employment issues, Mental Health & Substance Use Consumer, Family and Peer Support Program for citizens and their families with mental health & addiction concerns, Nova Vita Second Stage Housing providing accommodation for women who have left abusive relationships or experienced past abuse, the Dental Access Fund and providing free legal advocacy to community members.

KB Searchlight is an initiative of the Kootenay Boundary CYMHSU Action Team, coordinated locally by Kootenay Boundary Division of Family Practice and hosted by partner agency, Kootenay Family Place. Other action team members include families, doctors, mental health counsellors, school administrators, health authority staff, community agencies and more. The Child Youth Mental Health and Substance Use Collaborative is supported by the Shared Care Committee with additional support for specialist participation from the Specialist Services Committee. Both committees are partnerships between Doctors of BC and government of BC.
