The Aboriginal Early Years program offers cultural support and consultation to early years staff as well as cultural support and resources/activities to local early years and childcare programs/agencies. Examples of activities we provide include traditional drumming, story telling and culturally relevant crafting. In addition, the program offers Aboriginal family gatherings and home support in the communities of Trail and Salmo for Aboriginal families with children 0-6, as well as outreach support in the Grand Forks and area for Aboriginal families with children 0-6.

The Aboriginal Family Connections program offers support and counseling for Aboriginal Families in collaboration with MCFD to offer assistance with locating extended family members of Aboriginal children and youth entering the foster care system, as well as, providing cultural connections for Aboriginal children and youth in care of MCFD.
We work with Aboriginal families and youth in care to develop Cultural Life Books and we support placements of Aboriginal children and youth in care of their families. The Family Connections Program also, offers advocacy, support and referrals to other local services.

Baby’s Best Chance is a program for pregnant women that provides nutrition, lifestyle, parent education, emotional support and fun groups to meet other pregnant women and families with young children. Nutritious lunch is provided as well as help with breast feeding.
Parenting programs include group sessions which are focused on developing communication, coping and parenting skills that help parents and caregivers to understand and respond to their child’s behavior during every stage of a child’s development from infant to teen.

KB Searchlight is an initiative of the Kootenay Boundary CYMHSU Action Team, coordinated locally by Kootenay Boundary Division of Family Practice and hosted by partner agency, Kootenay Family Place. Other action team members include families, doctors, mental health counsellors, school administrators, health authority staff, community agencies and more. The Child Youth Mental Health and Substance Use Collaborative is supported by the Shared Care Committee with additional support for specialist participation from the Specialist Services Committee. Both committees are partnerships between Doctors of BC and government of BC.
