Supported Child Development Program (SCDP)
The Supported Child Development Program (SCDP) is a community-based, family-centered, child development program that is based on the philosophy of inclusion. Inclusion is an approach to delivering service in which all children are welcomed, supported, and valued.
Families can self-refer to this free, voluntary program or give their consent for other service providers to refer their child. All children qualify for consultative services if they are in the age categories we serve.
The Supported Child Development Program promotes and facilitates quality inclusion for children throughout the West Kootenay Boundary Region. SCD helps to ensure that all children have equitable access to inclusive childcare programs, and the supports needed to fully participate regardless of their abilities.
The Supported Child Development Program offers:
- Contact information to families so they can find a program that best meets the needs of their child and family. Programs include- childcare, preschool, and after-school care.
- Works with families and community care providers to determine what support may be needed for a child to participate in a childcare program.
- Supports childcare programs to develop and implement inclusive philosophies, practices & polices.
- Supports community capacity building by providing information, resources, suggestions, and strategies. If feasible, this may include workshops and In Service training.
- Supports families through transitions to other programs.
Eligibility:
All children residing in BC are eligible for the SCDP based on the following three criteria which all need to be met:
- Your child must be birth to twelve years of age.
- They must be accessing or planning to access an inclusive childcare program.
- They must have a developmental delay in physical, cognitive, communicative, or social/emotional areas.
Note:
- This delay can be documented or observed by a variety of professionals. Your child does not have to have an official diagnosis to qualify for service
- The primary focus for SCDP service is for children three-five years of age.
- Children who are referred under the age of three, or in the age group of five-twelve years of age are a continued priority.
